Ottawa’s climate is brutal on decks. Freezing winters, spring snowmelt, summer UV rays, and fall rain constantly assault your wood, causing cracking, splitting, greying, and rot. An unprotected deck can deteriorate in just 2-3 years. Professional deck staining and sealing is the single best investment you can make to protect your outdoor living space and avoid costly repairs or premature replacement.
Our deck staining team has refinished hundreds of decks across Ottawa – from small backyard decks in Centretown to expansive multi-level structures in Kanata and Barrhaven. We use only premium deck stains and sealers rated for Canadian winters, applied after thorough cleaning, sanding, and preparation. The result is a rich, beautiful finish that repels water, resists UV fading, and protects against mold and mildew for years.
Enhance and protect the natural beauty of your wood deck with a premium semi-transparent or solid-colour stain. We offer a wide range of stain colours from natural cedar and honey tones to modern grey and driftwood shades. Stain penetrates into the wood grain for deep protection while showcasing the natural beauty of the lumber.
For a bold, solid-colour look or to cover older, weathered wood, deck paint provides maximum coverage and UV protection. We use specialized deck and porch paints with anti-slip additives for safety. Paint is ideal for decks with extensive patching or mixed wood species where a uniform look is desired.
Clear or tinted deck sealers provide invisible protection against moisture penetration – the primary cause of deck deterioration. We apply high-quality penetrating sealers that repel water while allowing the wood to breathe. Ideal for new pressure-treated decks or recently sanded wood you want to keep looking natural.
Before any stain or sealer can be applied, the deck must be thoroughly cleaned. We power wash using specialized deck cleaning solutions that remove grey weathering, mildew, dirt, and old finish residue without damaging the wood. Proper cleaning opens the wood grain for optimal stain absorption.
Rotted, cracked, or warped boards are replaced before staining. We also tighten loose screws, replace popped nails with deck screws, and fix any structural issues. There’s no point staining a deck with damaged boards – we make sure the structure is sound before finishing.
Railings, stairs, and pergolas face the same weather exposure as your deck surface. We stain or paint all associated structures to match or complement your deck finish. Railings and spindles are carefully brushed and wiped for a smooth, drip-free result.
Your deck is an extension of your living space. We treat every deck project with the same care and precision we bring to interior finishing work.

A proven process designed for Ottawa’s climate – clean, prep, protect, and finish for maximum longevity.
We inspect your deck’s wood condition, existing finish, structural integrity, and sun exposure. We recommend the best product (stain, paint, or sealer) for your specific wood type and condition. You receive a detailed written quote with colour options.
We power wash with a specialized deck cleaner to remove dirt, mildew, grey weathering, and old finish residue. For previously stained decks, we use a deck stripper to remove failing product. After cleaning, we apply a wood brightener to restore the wood’s natural pH balance.
Rough areas, raised grain, and splinters are sanded smooth. Rotted boards are replaced, loose fasteners are tightened, and popped nails are replaced with deck screws. The deck is allowed to dry completely – typically 24-48 hours – before staining.
We apply your chosen product using professional brush, roller, and pad applicator techniques appropriate for your deck’s design. Stain is applied evenly, working with the grain, and excess is back-brushed to prevent lap marks and puddles. Two coats are applied where recommended by the product manufacturer.
We walk through the finished deck with you, check coverage consistency, and make any touch-ups. You receive a written maintenance guide with product information, re-coating schedule, and tips for keeping your deck looking great. We recommend annual cleaning and re-staining every 2-4 years depending on the product.
Professional deck staining in Ottawa typically costs $3–$7 per square foot, depending on deck size, condition, product choice, and preparation needed. A standard 200 sq ft deck costs $600–$1,400. Decks requiring stripping of old finish or extensive repairs will be on the higher end. We provide free, detailed quotes.
In Ottawa’s climate, most decks should be re-stained every 2-3 years with semi-transparent stain, or every 3-5 years with solid stain. Clear sealers need reapplication annually. The frequency depends on sun exposure, foot traffic, and product quality. South-facing decks exposed to full sun need more frequent maintenance.
Choose stain if: your deck is in good condition and you want to see the wood grain. Stains penetrate into the wood and don’t peel. Choose paint if: your deck has extensive patches, you want a solid colour, or the wood is heavily weathered. Paint provides maximum UV protection but can peel over time if not properly maintained.
The ideal time is late spring through early fall (May–September) when temperatures are between 10°C and 30°C with low humidity. Avoid staining in direct hot sunlight as it causes the stain to dry too quickly and reduces penetration. Overcast days with mild temperatures are actually the best conditions for deck staining.
New pressure-treated wood needs time to dry before staining – typically 2-6 months depending on the weather and the moisture content of the lumber. We test moisture levels with a meter. If the wood is too wet, the stain won’t penetrate. We recommend letting new decks weather through one summer before staining.
It depends on the existing finish condition. If the old stain is intact and just faded, we can clean and apply a fresh coat of the same type of stain over top. If the old stain is peeling, flaking, or a different colour, we strip it down to bare wood before applying new product. We assess this during our free inspection.
Solid-colour stains last the longest (3-5 years) because they contain the most pigment, which blocks UV damage. Semi-transparent stains last 2-3 years. Clear sealers last about 1 year. Oil-based stains (like TWP and Ready Seal) generally outperform water-based products in Ottawa’s freeze-thaw climate because they penetrate deeper and stay flexible.
Some composite decks can be stained if they’ve faded or become discoloured. We use specialized composite deck stains designed to bond to the plastic-wood material. However, not all composite products accept stain well. We’ll assess your specific deck material during our free inspection and recommend the best approach.
We stain and seal decks in every Ottawa neighbourhood. No matter the size or condition of your deck, we deliver professional results.
